Photography
Too often, I take a picture of something inspiring (like a sunset or baby’s smile) only to be disappointed at the result. More than an image, I want to capture a feeling; but it’s not easy. Sometimes it comes close, sometimes it doesn’t.
I lug around a backpack of lenses (Canon 24-70L, Canon 70-200 2.8L IS, Canon 100-400L IS, Sigma 15-30, and sometimes my Sigma 300-800), a Cannon 550 flash, tripods and monopods, my Canon 1Dm2, sometimes an assistant (one of my kids with a Canon 10D), and shoot pictures.
Using shutter speed, focus, aperture, focal length, frame position, and lighting (er, and photoshop), I try to preserve a moment of my life. Whether I stumble upon these moments, hunt them down, or create them, I hope for an image that takes me somewhere. Snap. Cool sand in my toes, water lapping against my ankles, the smell of seawater, warm sunshine on my face, and they cry of seagulls. That’s a nice one to capture.
I hope you enjoy my pictures. I’d love to hear your comments! You may also want to check out my article “Zen Photography in 10 Steps.” You can also see some of the slide shows I have put together in the past few years here.
If you have the Piclens plugin you can walk through a virtual gallery of all of my pictures by clicking the play button that shows up on the bottom left hand corner when you hover your pointer over the ram on the left. Click right on the play button, not just the picture, and you will find yourself in a massive virtual gallery. But if you haven’t installed the plugin, you’ll need do that first. Note: this is the best way to browse my photos. If you don’t have the plug in, it’s fast, easy, and way cool. Many sites (Google and Flickr are two of many) support it. Follow the this link and click “download” to install it (you may need to answer “yes” to a prompt asking if you are sure you want to run it). You’ll need to close explorer and restart it it and you’ll be on board! Come back to my site and follow the ram inside! Once you are there, roll your mouse wheel to zoom in and out, click a picture to focus on it, and click and drag to move through the wall of photos.
If you are interested in saving money printing your pictures, see my post here.
It was tough choosing under 100 pictures from nearly 4,000 that Curtis and I took on our trip. Here are a few of our favorites. You can read more about the trip here.
